Artie Smith Oval Croquet pavilion. Bomaderry, NSW

Ayling & Drury, Local Architect South Coast and JN consulting engineers were engaged to masterplan a newly proposed sport and recreation precinct in Bombaderry, NSW. The precinct consists of a new sport oval suitable for women’s / men’s, cricket and AFL competitions, including amenities and clubrooms. The brief also included the design of new croquet club facilities and clubroom to the Eastern side of the development. The design of both facilities are contemporary and proposes two approaches towards public integrated design. The afl/cricket/clubrooms are social by design intent incorporating large outdoor public facilities for the viewing of sporting activities. These public facilities are connected to the change rooms allowing the building and various functions to be sheltered under one roof.
The croquet club is more private and enclosed avoiding larger public spaces. It respects the quiet and reduced physical activity required in contrast to its neighbors. The building encloses the courtyard and allows intimate conversation while watching the participants over a cup of tea.
